Writing A B C or is it A Z P? Do You Write From Beginning To End? #writing

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013 | Random Thoughts, Work In Progress, Writing | No Comments

I’m busy writing book 4 in my Beach House Night Series and because these books have been pretty short on word count (7K-14K) I haven’t been really plotting them out.  With this series, what I’ve done is get a feel for the characters (hero/heroine), the scenes I wanted to happen in the story, and how I wanted it to end. There was no real “write down on paper plotting,” just a general idea. I wrote the blurb then started typing.

Back To Basics

Well, with book four…I’m kinda floundering because I kind of have to pull all the characters from books 1-3 together in this one and it’s not quite playing out the way I expected it to. I’m writing out of order. I don’t usually do that. I wrote the beginning, then, I “clearly” saw how I wanted it to end, so I wrote the last chapter.

Now, I’ve got to figure out the damn middle. I “do” have these four scenes/plot points in my mind so I have a blueprint of what I want to happen, but the logistics might not work out. My hero/heroine are, after all, at a beach house with a bunch of friends. I can’t very well have my them getting busy in the kitchen (heroine is a chef) or “starting” to get busy in the foyer, yet, I have these two scenes clear in my mind but unless I get rid of the other guests in the house…it’s not happening.

I could still write these two scenes and work the rest of the book around them, but I’m not sure. I hate starting over or taking the book in a different direction than I’d already planned…says the NON plotter…but I so wanna.  I guess I could think of something to get the other people out of the house, but there’s this whole emergency room hospital visit I have to work in from book #3, so I don’t know yet.

I have to figure this out!

I don’t like writing out of order. I like beginning to end. And that’s funny because sometimes I’ll be so anxious to see how a book ends that I’ll skip to the ending. Yeah..I know…that’s cheating…so what. LOL! But I like to write from the start to finish. I guess I’m just annoyed with myself because this particular book is not flowing for me like the other ones did.

Oh well.

I still have to figure this out. I think I’ll write those two scenes and hell, if they don’t work for this story…I can always use them for another. Right?

Must add word count!

Happy Hump Day,

Back To Basics – Lyric James’ Six Sentence Sunday, #sixsunday

Sunday, January 27th, 2013 | Blog Hop, Book Pimpage, Six Sentence Sunday | 6 Comments

Wow…I haven’t done Six Sentence Sunday in a while. But I’m back! Today I’m featuring Back To Basics, book #4 in the Beach House Nights series.  Don’t forget to visit the other authors participating in this hop. You can go here to get a list.

Now…the first six sentences of Back To Basics

Harper Coleman watched her friend’s retreating back and slid her gaze back to one man in the world who always sent her heart rate into the upper atmosphere, Blake Nelson. “You’re just as bad as he is,” she said, pointing a spatula at him. “Probably worse.”

He leaned back in his chair and gave her the sexy grin that always stole her breath. “You’ll never know until you try it out for yourself.”

The raw cadence of his voice slid over her skin and made it prickle.

Back To Basics

Blurb:

Harper Coleman learned the hard way to never let a man control her  or run her life. For the past three years the Miami chef has thrown her heart and soul into her restaurant. But when she’s invited to a friend’s beach house for the weekend, she finds a little R&R is just what the doctor ordered. But how’s Harper supposed to get the rest she so desperately needs with sinfully sexy Blake Nelson around throwing grease onto her already simmering lust.

Harper’s sassy charm hooked Blake Nelson the minute he tasted her famous sweet potato pie. This weekend is his chance to get close to the beautiful and sexy woman who creates masterpieces with her hands. Blake might not be able to whip up a culinary dish fit for consumption, but he’s cooking up a challenge she won’t be able to resist. As their sizzling competition flames into a feast for the senses, will going back to the basics of love be their final course?

New Release – Under His Cover by Lyric James #book, #novel, #kindle, #romance, #nook, #excerpt

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013 | Book Pimpage, Writing | No Comments

I am so excited to announce the release of my newest novel, Under His Cover. This novel has been a long time coming…meaning…I began writing this book back in 2006! That’s a lot of years in between beginning and publishing. This novel actually sat on my hard drive, finished, for a year before I even sent it to a beta reader to read. Another six months before I looked at her suggestions and revisions. But NOW..I’ve finally released it to the world. I hope you enjoy. The blurb and an excerpt are below.

Under His Cover 200

A night neither one of them can forget…

When Jade Conner attends her friend’s wedding she never intended to slip out of the reception and enjoy a one night stand with the sexy best man, Rhys Cunningham.

A lieutenant governor willing to bend the law to keep a family secret hidden forever…

When Rhys begins to receive threatening letters, a secret he’s kept hidden for eighteen years is about to be exposed if he doesn’t find some way to stop it.

A blackmailer with a hidden agenda who wants to expose it all…

Instead of going to the police, Rhys hires Jade to go undercover as his executive assistant to find out who’s sending the threats. Jade refuses to let their one night together interfere with the job she’s been hired to do. But maintaining a professional relationship with the man who made her toes curl becomes a little difficult when every time she turns around…she ends up under his covers.

Excerpt

Rhys’ hand slid down her back. “What about when you’re not working for me anymore? When the case is solved and you find out who’s sending the letters, would you be more receptive to what I have to say?”

“I thought we already agreed about who and what we were to each other several months ago.” She would not be another easy distraction for the night. Next weekend, there would be another woman on his arm, and she’d read about it in the paper the next day. Her self-esteem would drop to a brand new low.

“And you have a problem renegotiating our agreement?”

The music switched from a slow to an upbeat tempo, and he led her off the dance floor back to their table. She almost had to run to keep up with him, and in her high-heeled shoes, that was no easy feat.

“If you’d wanted to see me again, you would have called months ago. But you didn’t. I’m just the flavor of the night right now, Rhys. I’m convenient. I’m sure…” But before she could finish her statement he led her out of the ballroom and past the front desk of the hotel. “Where are you taking me?”

“Right here,” he said, and turned her around into a hidden alcove just off the lobby. All sound, except her breathing and his, evaporated. She was enveloped by his nearness, his musky smell, the sheer depth of him.

Rhys eased her back against the wall and placed his knee between her legs. She was almost positive the wetness coating her panties would leave a wet spot on his dress pants. Her need for something hard stroking her clit became unbearable, but she resisted the urge to grind her pussy against his thigh. “W-what are you doing?”

“Well, you said you were the flavor of the night. I thought it was about time I got a taste.”

When his lips and tongue made contact with her skin, she almost melted to the floor. She gripped his arms and held on as he devoured her shoulder and her neck. But when his teeth bit down on the spot just below her ear, she couldn’t stop the moan that escaped from her throat.

“Ummm…rich,” he said and nibbled a line from one side of her neck to the other. His mouth found the underside of her jaw. “God, you taste sweet.” Then the corner of her lips. “Your flavor is hard to define, but I know I want more of it.” And he delved his tongue inside her mouth. He took. He explored. It was passionate, delicious. Her nipples hardened against the thin material of her dress and knew if anyone looked down, they would know she was aroused.

And she was. Thoroughly, erotically aroused. His erection pulsed against her, and God help her she wanted him to strip off her clothing and take her right then and there. Her hands found the lapels of his jacket and pulled and pulled until she heard the soft swish of the material as it hit the floor.

Her teeth found the center of his throat and nipped before she dipped lower and found the first button and then the next. She raised her leg and wrapped her ankle around his calf, pulling him closer.

Rhys caressed her inner thigh and found the ridge of her panties. She almost cried out when one digit slipped under the elastic and grazed her lips. Her hips jerked forward in an attempt to suck his finger inside her pussy. But he only played with her, teased her, gliding his finger over her lips, up to gently pinch her clit and make her moan, make her beg.

When he pulled back, she gasped. “What…why did you stop?”

He had a hungry look on his face, and his pupils had turned a dark, charcoal gray, reminding her of a storm cloud brewing over the horizon. Then she heard laughing voices, the sound of soft heeled shoes and clacking heals.

Oh my God.

A Picture Is Worth…Guess What? #Pinterest #UnderHisCover

Thursday, January 10th, 2013 | Book Pimpage, Coming Soon, Promotion | No Comments

….A thousands words. Well, 500 words as far as Pinterest is concerned.

pinterest

So I’ve been getting into Pinterest a lot as of late and I remembered a couple of posts about doing “boards” for your books and I decided to give it a try. I created a board for Under His Covers. My upcoming January release.

Under His Cover 200

It’s fun!

I thought back to different things that happened in my story and then “searched” for items that related to it. For example, in the beginning of my novel, Jade (my heroine) is a bridesmaid at a wedding and I begin the story just as the bridal bouquet is about to be thrown. The bouquet is made of roses and gardenias. I did a search for a bridal bouquet of roses and gardenias and “voila,” I have a picture that represents my story. I pinned it to the board and added the lines from the story that talk about the bouquet.

Jade Conner thrust backward, flung an elbow to the right and stepped on an instep to the left. For some god-awful reason, fate intervened and dropped the ribbon-wrapped bundle of roses and gardenias directly into her arms.

Pretty cool huh?

Jade also has a thing for butterflies (you’ll have to read the story to find out why). As a romantic gesture, Rhys (my hero) takes her to an aquarium that has a butterfly exhibit. So of course, I find pictures of butterflies to include on the board and under one of the butterflies I added the lines from the story that match.

“How did you…it’s so…they’re so beautiful. There are so many of them.” Rhys reached forward and grazed the tip of his finger over the white gold and amethyst butterfly charm lying against her chest. “You always wear one,” he said.

Now…will this type of promotion transfer into sales…I don’t know. But, it was fun doing it and it’ll give my readers a better visual before/after they read the story if they go to my Pinterest page. Random people who visit my page my read a caption and say, “Hey. I want to read that.”

At least that’s what I hope.

You can visit my Under His Cover Pinterest board here. And please, feel free to follow me and I’ll follow you right back. Let me know what you think.

Peace, love and sex!

Under His Cover 200Up All Night 2

For the bloghop all you have to do is leave a comment and tell me one place you’d love to visit in your lifetime and why.  Super easy, right? I was just talking to my husband about this a couple of days ago. “I’m” in charge of the “family” vacations we take every spring break, but I told my husband that it’s “his” job to make sure I go to all these places at least once in my lifetime.

  1. Rio (during Carnival)
  2. New Orleans (during Mardi Gra)
  3. New York City (for New Years Eve)
  4. An African Safari

All of those are a little bit naughty…right? The African Safari maybe not so much…but I think that’s an experience I should have. He told me I just wanted to go to Rio so I could show my boobs because they have nude beaches over there…SO NOT TRUE!  Ha!

So come on bloggers…what’s that one place you just “have” to visit once in your lifetime? And don’t forget to visit the other authors and bloggers participating in the bloghop.

Peace, love and sex!
