Lyric James Reads Banned Books, #bannedbooksweek, #ireadbannedbooks

Sunday, September 30th, 2012 | Book Pimpage | 8 Comments

I am a Wife, Mother, Reader, Author…and Librarian. If there’s one word that gives me a seroius case of the ”you can kiss my ass.” is CENSORSHIP! In celebration of Banned Books Week, all my blog posts this week will be dedicated to something related to banned books and/or censorship.

To learn more about Banned Books Week you can go here.

I’ve been a school librarian for the last 9 years and I’ve been lucky. No one has ever “challenged” a book I’ve had in my library. To me, you have to be a real…I don’t know if I want to call it dedicated (nutcase)…to go through the process of challenging a book. In case you didn’t know it, every library (school, public, college) has to have a  policy or procedure for someone if they want to challenge a book.

And it’s a long process.

First, the person has to fill out this long (ass) form telling their reasons why they feel the book should be removed (banned) from that particular library. I’m not sure how the process is for college or public librarias, but in the school system, the librarian then has to give it to his/her principal. The principal with the librarian have to establish (if not already established) a committee that fully represents each level of the school (adminstration, teacher, librarian, parents, community) who will each then read the challenged material. After this is done, they will then meet to discuss the book to determine (giving their reasons to ban or not to ban) if the book should be removed (banned) from the library shelves. Depending on what the decision is, it can go further up the chain of command to the school board, etc. Honestly, there’s not that much time in my day or my life for that I want to dedicate to removing (banning) one book off a library shelf.

I let my kids read. Whatever they want to read (within reason) I let them read it. Now don’t get me wrong, my 13 and 15 year will NOT be reading the 50 shades of whatever, or any of my books until they are old enough to read them. BUT if they find a book on the shelf at their school library or the public library and they want to read it, then hey…they can read it. In fact, a few of the books on the challenged/banned books lists, my girls have already read. Yay! Take a look at the list of banned and challenged classics here. The ALA compiles a list of the books most challenged each year as well. You can take a look at those lists here (scroll down to the bottom of the page).

What books have you read on the challenged lists?

Have a great week and go out there and read a banned book!

Peace, love and sex!

Flatulence, Burps and Arm Farts, #books, #romance, #hero

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 | Random Thoughts, Writing | 3 Comments

Why am I blogging about this you wonder? And what in the heck does it have to do with romance? Well…I’m gonna tell you.

My son has discovered “arm farts.”

He’s six. SIX!

Where did this come from? He’s never seen my husband do this. Nor me or my daughters? And again….he’s SIX!

I’m assuming he got it from another student (BOY) at school and ever since then I’ve caught him doing it and I just look at him and wonder. Why? Seriously. Whhhhhyyyy? This morning after he ate the nice warm golden brown waffle I made….he proceeds to do arm farts.

All I could think….God help me and the woman he decides to marry.

Yes I know he’ll eventually grow out of this asinine behavior, but, it got me to thinking…this is another thing we as romance authors don’t put in the stories we write. Who wants to date a man OR woman who farts in public?

It happens…I know it. You know it. We all get gas. Sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s embarrasing. But when we’re writing a novel we don’t put these unfortunate events in those pages anywhere.  Our readers don’t want to read about our hero/heroine passing gas in front of each other. Why? It’s a turn off. In the beginning stages of a relationship this is the one thing you avoid doing. You will leave a room, walk off in another direction, hold it in until your stomach hurts. You will do ANYTHING to not fart or burp in front of the guy/girl you’re dating. This side of you is saved for later.

Like marriage! Ha!

Peace, love and sex!

Temptation City – Six Sentence Sunday, #sixsunday

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012 | Book Pimpage, Six Sentence Sunday | 5 Comments

Today’s Six Sentence Sunday comes from Temptation City, an older release from Samhain Publishing. It’s a little longer than six sentences but this is the first time my hero/heroine meet and it’s kinda fun! Hope you enjoy it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ashia allowed her gaze to travel his body from head to toe and then back up again. Close-cropped hair cut, trimmed mustache and full lips slanted upward in a smirk. He looked like he’d been sculpted by Michelangelo, dipped in caramel and left for human admiration.
She saw him peeling away every stitch of clothing on his body and every woman in the club screaming her head off, begging to put money between his ass cheeks.
“Ma’am?” he asked, an eyebrow arched.
She shook away the arousal that threatened to turn her into a complete idiot. “Um, the position?”
“Yes, I heard you had a bartender position open?”
She glanced down at her papers and back up again. “I’m not hiring, um, bartenders at the moment. I’m only looking for…” Her voice trailed off as her eyes zeroed in on his crotch. “…strippers.”
A look that bordered on disbelief crossed his incredibly handsome features. “Strippers?”
“Yes,” she replied. “The only ad I placed was for male exotic dancers.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mixing business with pleasure has never been so tempting!

Ashia Forrester has always lived by one rule: Never mix business with pleasure. As the owner of Temptation City, a male strip club, that has never been a problem. Until now. The talented new stripper she’s hired stirs a desire in her that cannot be denied.

Jalen Spencer is an undercover cop who loves his job. His next assignment is to pose as as stripper at a local club and find out if the owner is laundering money for the mob. He’s pretty sure this mission will be a walk in the park, until he meets the sexy owner. It isn’t long before Jalen’s giving hot performances on stage and in her bed.

But how will she handle it when she learns everything about him is a lie?

Temptation City is available NOW!

“Yep.”

“Wesley.”

Want to be cornered by a sexy shifter? Phoenix Kiss #swag, #Amazon, #giftcertificate

paranormal hop
Welcome to the 18 and Over Giveaway Hop sponsored by Bitten By Paranormal Romance and Gabrielle Bisset. This hop is meant to celebrate all things adult and everything sexy about books, sex and reading!

For the hop I’ll be giving away an e-copy of my paranormal romance, Phoenix Kiss and a $15.00 gift certificate to Amazon!

Let me tell you a little bit about how and why I came to write Phoenix Kiss. I thought of the story years ago. Paranormal romance had really kicked up a little bit in reading romance land but I just didn’t see myself writing about were anything or vampires. I wanted to write something different and after I watched one of the Harry Potter installments, it just came to me after seeing Dumbledore’s Phoenix.

What about a Phoenix shapeshifter?

Wouldn’t that be cool?

YES!

So, I sat down to write it…and write it…and write it. It took me awhile. The “idea” came pretty quickly. The execution did not. BUT…I finally got it written, pitched it during a workshop and the Ellora’s Cave editor loved my idea and bought it.

Here’s the blurb for Phoenix Kiss.

Layla Martin makes her living exposing all the wicked little secrets of the rich and famous. Exposing Jordan Gaines, the mysterious millionaire, is exactly the break she needs.

Jordan has spent his entire life protecting a dark secret—he’s a phoenix shapeshifter, one of the last of his kind. When he finds Layla hiding in his home after he shifts, he offers her a deal—he won’t call the police if she spends one night in his bed.

Layla believes she’s stumbled onto the story of a lifetime. Jordan thinks sleeping with Layla will discredit any exposé she plans to write. Neither expects the hours of unrelenting, primitive passion, the fast bond that forms between them or their fierce desire to keep the night from coming to an end.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’s an excerpt of Phoenix Kiss.
Again when she touched him, it was as if a magnetic sexual current washed over him in waves. Her touch got him hard every time her hand moved over his skin? He’d known the woman all of five minutes. This wasn’t possible.
“Give me one good reason.” His eyes trained on her mouth, noticed that even without the adornment of lipstick, it was a juicy red. When her tongue slid over her lips again, he tracked the movement and instinctively wished her tongue were washing over his dick instead.
“I…I wanted to…wanted to…”
He hung up the phone and faced her. “I know what the Tattler publishes. What did you expect to find when you broke into my home? Me, involved in some type of sex fetish or BDSM games?”
Even in the dim light, he saw a flush coat her cheeks before she lowered her head.
Jordan laughed as he moved around her and strode to the chest of drawers in the right corner of his room. “But that’s not what you found, is it? Now you have something much more and you expect me to let you walk out of my house and tell the world what I am?”
He opened the top drawer, pulled out a pair of soft and worn cotton pajama pants. “But if I call the police, tell them I caught you in my house and they arrest you, how credible will your story be then?”
She looked up and frowned and began to twist and twine the poor little black shirt all over again.
“They’ll assume you’re either a stalker or one of the many reporters I’ve spurned over the years out for revenge.”
Not that each and every one of them didn’t deserve it. After his guardian was ruined because of one simple byline, one slipup, he knew he’d never put himself in the same position. He’d never expected one of them to be so bold as to break into his home.
Now he had to do some damage control. That’s what he paid a publicist for but even she couldn’t get him out of this shit. No, he’d have to take care of this little scandal all by himself.
“What will your editor say to you? What will he ask?” He pretended to ponder this. “Where’s your proof? Did you get a picture? Did I admit it? Your answer to all those questions will be a resounding…” He paused for effect. Her brow began to narrow and her lips pursed. “No.”
“But I know what I saw,” she whispered.
“That may be so but you have no proof, Layla,” he said quietly before stepping in front of her again, towering over her small, voluptuous frame. “Your word against mine? You know who I am? You’re going to tell the world that I’m a shapeshifting phoenix, with absolutely not one shred of proof?” He shook his head. “I don’t think so.”
Jordan reached up and caressed her from just below her ear, around her cheek to her pouting lip. Her tongue darted out to lick him and she gasped, stepping back, her eyes widening with disbelief.
Right then and there, he knew exactly how he was going to play this little game with Ms. Layla Martin. He advanced on her again but when she stepped away, the backs of her legs met his bed.
Although he hadn’t seen a wedding ring on her finger, he asked anyway. “Are you married?” Not that he gave a damn. But he might as well get it out of the way.
“No,” she said, shaking her head back and forth as she took short, shallow breaths. Her voice was low and slightly husky and so damn sexy it made his dick jump.
He could see her pulse thumping in her throat. Being this close to him unnerved her. Her body caused every wicked thought he could conjure to roam around his brain. She was a very beautiful woman, after all. Even though she was dressed completely in black, he could still appreciate her generous curves, the luscious breasts, the very round bottom he’d cupped earlier. One very decadent, sexy package.
His fingers tingled with the desire to remove the band from around the ponytail she wore and slide through her thick hair before he gripped the back of her head and moved his mouth over hers.
But that was impossible.
What Every Parent Should Know About Education
Wednesday, September 5th, 2012 | Day Job, School | 2 Comments
Depending on where you are in the United States or in another country…school has started or will be starting soon. As an educator, I got to thinking about the education system (students, parents, teachers, administration) and thought I’d throw out a few things I think parents should know about education.
Disclaimer: You might not like what I’m about to say so either put on your big girl panties/big boy boxers and deal with it or…go find another blog to read. Sorry…but I had to say it. Now….
#1 – Teacher / Schools are not babysitters.  - They are educational institutions. Please don’t send your child to school without actually “registering” him/her to actually attend the school. I’ve personally witnessed (because I had to babysit) three students whose parents sent them to school and didn’t even register them, never visited the school, never called the school…nothing. WHY would you send your child to a school you’ve never visited, you’ve never called, and never even bothered registering your student to attend? What do you expect? Your child’s name to magically appear in our computer system and print a schedule. NO…we need INFORMATION about you AND your child. We don’t know YOU nor YOUR child. It is YOUR job to be a responsible parent.
#2 – “I don’t have homework.” – If you hear your child say this, it may be true…on occasion. But if your child comes in the house and tells you this every freaking day…THEY ARE LYING!!! Especially if they are in middle school or high school. At the minimum…your child needs to read a book for 30 minutes every night. A child needs to read 1,000,000 words (yes…that’s one million) every year to increase their reading level and comprehension. So, if your child is coming in the house telling you everyday they don’t have homework…call your child’s teachers and get the real story.
#3 – “The teacher doesn’t like me.” – Let me start out by saying that no teacher sets out to dislike your child. Ever. A teacher doesn’t decide to be a teacher because they don’t like kids. Teachers decide to be teachers because they “love” kids and they “love” to teach and want to educate. However, if your kid is a little shit then…well…it could be true. I have run across children that I wish to God didn’t come to school. I’m sorry…it happens…but the kid never knew that. I didn’t give that child the “stank face” when I saw him coming. Think about it…as an adult there are other adults that you don’t like…that you wish wouldn’t come near you at work…but, you have to put on the appearance that you like this person anyway because it’s your job. Sometimes…we have to do that too. If your child is at home getting on your last nerves and being a little but head to you with the smart mouth and back talkk…9 times out of 10…he’s doing it with this teacher as well. Some students know exactly what button to push to irritate their teachers. I’ve seen it over and over again. My point…even if a teacher doesn’t like your kid…your kid will never know it.
#4 – It’s not the teacher’s job to teach your child the ABC’s and 123′s. – Literally. It’s not. If you are a parent…you should have taught this to your child BEFORE they started school. I’m talking about the simple stuff. A – Z. 1 – 10. Primary colors. Simple shapes. How to write their name. Say their address and phone number. Their mom and dad’s REAL name. You don’t know how many kids are asked their parents names and they say either “momma” or a “nickname.” Seriously. AND…I’ve run across too many middle schoolers who don’t even know their street address or their home phone number. Come on! I’m truly talking about the simple stuff here. Teach your child the basics because it’s a reflection on you if they don’t know it. Story time - I had a student in my building last year..a sixth grader…who couldn’t read. COULD. NOT. READ. His mother didn’t know it. I don’t understand this. Please…please…teach your kids the simple stuff.  Read to your child. Make your child read to you. Everyday!
#5 – Once your child gets to middle school, you don’t have to get involved anymore. – NOT TRUE! Honestly…as your child progresses from elementary school, to middle school, to high school…you should get “more” involved. When kids are in elementary school they are with one teacher all day long and there is a general “fear” of the teacher but as students get older that fear disappears and laziness sets in. For some students. Not all. It’s important NOW more than ever that you show your child that you are involved in their education because if YOU as a parent slack off…the student may begin to slack and this will trickle over into high school. If a student slacks off in high school the result could be YOU (parent) paying for summer school or your child not graduating because they don’t have enough credits. Story time agaoin – I heard about a student who went to school all four years (9-12) but didn’t earn ONE SINGLE CREDIT!!! Not one! She really thought she was going to graduate with her peers. How did SHE not know she wasn’t going to graduate? How did her PARENT not know this? Because the parent wasn’t involved. Don’t slack off on your involvement because you think your student is older and mature enough to figure it out on their own…it’s not true. They need you now more than ever.
#6 – “School’s not fun. It’s boring.” Even if a class might be boring…school in itself…is NOT boring. When I was in school history classes bored me to tears. I didn’t like Math. I didn’t like Science. BUT…I was around my friends ALL DAY LONG!!! How can this NOT be fun? School is your child’s social interaction time. It’s where they see their friends. It’s where their boyfriend or girlfriend is. How can this NOT be fun? In today’s education system all we here is “make your lessons engaging to students…get them involved…make it fun…make them want to learn.” Don’t listen to your child when they tell you school isn’t fun.
 #7 – School’s don’t need parents to volunteer. – Not true. We always need volunteers. We need volunteers. We WANT volunteers. Think about it, when your child was in elementary school the teachers always needed you for stuff: room mother, PTA, Christmas parties, Valentine parties, etc. Why would this change in middle school or high school. We still need you. And think about it…the more involved you are in your child’s school, everyone will know you in the building, principal, teachers, office staff. AND…your child will know they can’t slack off, not do homework, not do classwork because you’re going to be there. Deep down…your child will know you care.
#8 – The calculator is your student’s friend. – Yes AND No. Let me explain. If your child is in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trig, Calculus…you get my meaning…the calculator IS their friend. If your child is in the 8th grade and they don’t know their multiplication facts…the calculator is NOT your child’s friend.  Believe me…this is not a joke. I think we give students calculators waaaay to early. If a child is in elementary school, there is no reason for them to use a calculator. They should be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, divide, add fractions, add decimals, etc….BY HAND. Once you start giving a child a calculator…all learning goes out the window and then you have a child who can’t multiply 6 x 8 in the 8th grade without asking for a calculator. I remember being drilled over and over and over again in the third/fourth grade and this doesn’t happen anymore and it scares me. Maybe since half the nation has embraced common core we will see these gaps begin to decrease. Otherwise…we’re going to have a nation full of people who can’t do simple math.
#9 – Open House is to discuss grades and behavior. – NOOOOO it’s not. Open House is so you can meet your child’s teachers, visit their classrooms, learn about the school, meet the administrative staff and counselors, learn how you can become involved (volunteer!) at the school. It’s not to discuss how Little Johnny is doing in class. If you want to discuss this, make an appointment for a parent teacher conference. That way, you can have one-on-one time with the teacher(s) about Little Johnny. Open House is usually one hour. Depending on the grade level, a teacher has anywhere from 25 to 180 students. A teacher can’t talk about 180 different students in one hour. Plus, if you start talking about these things, you run the risk of everyone hearing about Little Johnny and how he acts up in class and doesn’t do his homework and now everyone knows your business. Don’t do this. To yourself, your child, or the teacher.
#10 – Homework should last 3-4 hours. – Noooooo. It should not.Unless every teacher your child has gives them homework…homework should only last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. If your child is coming home with 50 math problems…something isn’t right. (I’m picking on Math today.) Most of my best teacher friends are all math teachers (math specialist, Geometry teacher, special education math teacher, national board certified math teacher and nationally awarded math teacher – you get my point). No math teacher should give that many problems for homework. Your child should have received instruction and time to practice in class. It shouldn’t take 50 problems of homework to let the teacher know if the child gets it or not. It should really only take about 10. Let’s face it…if the child is doing problem one wrong….he or she will be still doing it wrong by problem 50. What’s the point in that?
#11 – You only have to buy school supplies at the beginning of the year. – WRONG! Major supplies, binders, composition notebooks…maybe. But pencil and paper. You need to stock up on it so your student has an unending supply at home to pull from. Look at your child when they leave the house. Do they have a backpack, folder, binder…something? Everyday I see students walk back and forth to classess with absolutely NOTHING in their hands. And this is only the third week of school for my students. This is crazy! This is something I strongly suggest you talk to your child about AND their teacher about when you have that one-on-one conference. Find out if your child comes to class everyday prepared with the necessary supplies. If your child is walking around all day with nothing…then 9 times out of 10…they are DOING nothing in class OR borrowing from their classmates and this isn’t fair. My daughter’s love mechanical pencils. I make a point to buy a package of 10(that they can split), along with notebook paper everytime I go to the store. Again…make sure your child is prepared for school each day with the proper materials.
#12 – Not every child is meant to go to college. – Well, let me rephrase that to say not every child is ready to go to college immediatley after high school. I’m going to tell you my own story regarding this one. I wish I would have gone into the military after I’d gotten out of high school instead of going to college. Truly I do. Even though I was an A/B student and thought I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, once I got to college, I changed my majors 3 times. In 3 years. And the last semester of that third year…I flunked out. I was working a full time job because I needed the money, going to school at night and I had a boyfriend. Guess which one was NOT a priorty. It wasn’t until after I turned 27 that I decided I wanted to go back to college and get a degree. I was more focused at 27. I was driven at 27. I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I’m not promoting people send their children off to the military by any means, but really sit down and have a discussion with your child and decide if they are ready for college when the graduate from high school, or is it something they want to put off for a little while. I know this may sound crazy coming from a teacher, but you and your child can save yourself a lot of time, money and heart ache if they wait. I know I would have. Even now, I’m debating if I want to go back to college and get my doctorate degree. Why? Because I really don’t want to study. I don’t want to write papers. I want to focus on my writing career right now and I know if I go back to school, writing will have to take a backseat. Education IS important, don’t get me wrong, and in today’s society and economy you probably need it, but if a child isn’t motivated enough to make it a priority, don’t force it on them cause it could backfire on you in the end. And by backfire…I mean waste a whole ton of money.
I hope my educational tips were helpful! Have a great beginning of the school year!
Peace, love and sex!
What do you need to do to enter?
Each day of the hop I’m going to talk about a different romantic favorite: gifts, books, movies, keepsakes.
My topic for today is my favorite romantic movies.
 I think I’ve said before that I love movies…love love LOVE movies. They are almost like books to me. It’s the escapism, the fantasy. And just like books, I like to watch different genres. I like comedies, action/adventure, mystery/crime, drama and science fiction. But my all time favorite is the romance. So today I’m going to share a few of my favorite romantic movies.
The Lake House
August Rush
Stardust
Hitch
There are others, but I can watch these four movies over and over and over again. If you haven’t seen them, you should!
What about you? What are some of your favorite romantic movies?
Don’t forget to visit the other authors participating in the blog hop.
