Today Was A Better Day

Good meeting today. We have a new principal this year so today she really talked to us about her goals and what direction she wants us to take our kids in. Really great stuff. I wasn*t sure when when they dropped somebody on us from not only out of district…but out of state how I*d like her, but she seems really friendly and personable, and most of all *honest* about her expectations.

Tomorrow I get to actually get some work done in my library straightening up and opening up boxes of brand spankin new books, the real treat. Whoopie! I’m going to have to make myself shelve and not *read* - save that fun for later.

Well, one more day and then school starts on Monday. I*m anxious about my kids going to school this year. I have a second grader and a third grader. My second grader is super smart, is in the honors program, made all As last year, can read her hiney off, all the stuff you want your kid to be - so I really hope she gets a teacher who will challenge her. But, my third grader struggles. She*s been going to tutoring the last three and half months and I hope it helps and translates over to good grades (she got pretty good grades last year, mostly Bs), and a boost to her self-confidence this year. The school is having an open-house tomorrow evening so I*ll get to meet both their teachers.

So, what about you guys? Do you have school-age children (or nieces/nephews) and do you worry that their challenged enough, whether or not their teacher cares about their success?

My baby is only 2.5 but I do want her to do well in school, but we’ve discussed where we might want her to go in the future, if we’re still living at the same address.

I find it interesting you mentioned the new principal and the motivation they give. My understanding is the principals are the ones to make a big difference to making a school better.

I certainly wonder when I send my kids to school if I make the correct choices in schools for them and if I am involved enough to influence the teachers methods.

I certainly don’t want to make to wrong school choices for my kids and have them suffer for it later. I want them to have a good education so they have choices for their future.

This year will be tough for my five year old. He’s doing kindergarten again. I’ve spent some time thinking it’s my fault, but I know that’s just silly.
My four year old is doing three days of preschool. He’s not happy about it. It limits his freedom. Oh well. He really needs it.
So, yeah, I’m a little worried, but I know it will be OK one way or another.

*sob* My middleson starts kindergarten September 13th. I’m *terrified*. He’s absolutely brilliant. But, due to ear infections in his early infancy, his speech isn’t all that hot. Oh, add into it he’s the size of most 6 year olds (he’s 3 and a half) well, I’m terrified for him.

His older brother will be going into grade four, and he’s in the french immersion program. He can read and write at the grade 4/5 level already in both French and English. But, in grade four, apparantly they really start getting more academic than they have before.

Yeah, I’m a mess. :) Thankfully babyboy is home for two years still…

My son is 3 and we have discussed whether I will homeschool him or we will send him to a private school. My sister is a teacher and she could help me with lots of material and lesson plans so I am actually leaning towards homeschooling. I think any loving parent worries about their child’s education. We all want the best for our kids.

Don’t have kids but my brother is still schooling and we all want our loved ones to have the best education they can get.
